Two posts in a row about ladies I love on video. I don't know what to tell you. What else do I have to think about? I literally only write about Taylor and Beyonce on this blog. I do know about other things, y'all. Pinky swearsies.
We all know Taylor debuted the Bad Blood video last night at the Billboard Music Awards - we all know that, RIGHT??? Please god, tell me we all know that. She's been Instagramming for what seems like... forever? about it, introducing us to the members of her squad each day. The video itself was, for the most part, super well played. I was chatting with Betsy about it and while we both agreed the plot could have used a bit more fleshing out, it was still so cool and sexy. Who ever thought I'd be saying a Taylor Swift video was cool and sexy? That girl is a BOMBSHELL. Well, all of her friends are bombshells. Gigi Hadid blows my mind - she is so pretty it's unreal. Also her eyebrows are on another level. And I'll always love Karlie.
Of course the Feeling Myself video leaked early, with no warning and little fanfare. Beyonce and Nicki Minaj are being awesome at Coachella mostly, with the BEST hair and having the time of their lives. Like how much of this video is even staged, really? I feel like that's literally how they live. Beyonce's hair lately is too too good. I'm so jealous of her long hair. I want it. GIVE me IT. Nicki Manaj is so intimidating. She's so cool and so intense and you just want her to like you SO bad but you inevitably say something awkward or stupid and you totally don't pass the test and she thinks you are lame and guess what, you are.
So, both videos are cheeky and fun and cool, but in completely different ways. In typical 1989 Taylor fashion, her video is highly produced, cinematic and self-referential (I mean. She got Olivia and Meredith to cameo). Beyonce did her usual on-purpose grainy film quality with a casual, party vibe (remember 7/11? Let's watch that video again, together, and all nod our heads in unison when B tells us that she's fresher than us. Yes Queen B, that is absolutely true).
Both women are in complete control of their image and their content but approach their careers in completely opposite ways. Taylor is deliberate and studied while Beyonce is effortless and offhanded. Funnily enough, though, B is the mysterious, private one while we all know Taylor wears her heart on her sleeve, bless her. I guess what I'm trying to say is this: these latest two videos from these goddesses of music are quintessentially them in all the ways and I love them for it.
